Almost everyone has heard or read snatches of poetry by Lakes Poets such as William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. They were captivated and inspired by the beauty of the lakes and fells, as was Beatrix Potter, whose home at Hill Top near Hawkeshead has become a shrine for Peter Rabbit and Mrs Tiggy-winkle fans the world over.

The landscape, with its lakes and fells, is breathtaking.

The region covers a varied landscape from the Chiltern Hills in the West to the unique Cambridgeshire fens, the Norfolk Broads and the pretty, rolling Suffolk countryside. Among English landscape artists John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough were inspired by their native scenery.

Historic market towns and cities offer as much variety: the fine cathedrals at Norwich and Ely, the half-timbered medieval “wool towns” of Suffolk, such as Lavenham, the picturesque Abbey ruins at Bury St Edmunds and the historic waterfront at Ipswich. Add to this the Roman heritage of St Albans and Colchester and the ancient colleges of Cambridge University.

Spectacular coastlines, with wild cliffs and smugglers’ caves, abound in Devon and Cornwall.

Modern attractions like the Eden Project contrast with ancient sites like Stonehenge. Rugged countryside like Dartmoor and Exmoor beckon walkers and others, such as Glastonbury and Tintagel, linked with King Arthur, are wrapped in myth and mystery.

Just over the border are the English counties of Herefordshire and Shropshire, both with almost quintessential English countryside, but often missed by overseas and home-grown visitors.

Once the engine room of the Industrial Revolution, the cities and towns of the Heart of England have undergone a revolution of their own over the last 30 years, with massive modernisation programmes.

But no visit to the area would be complete without a visit to Stratford-upon-Avon, the home of The Bard. Beautiful countryside abounds, particularly in the Cotswolds and the Malvern Hills, a lifelong inspiration for composer Edward Elgar.
